Work
It's a new era for PCs. Sleek and lightweight, with a focus on beautiful design and innovative materials, Windows PCs have reached new heights in performance and battery life.
Play
Entertainment and apps of every kind take center stage. Tap into your creative side, lose yourself in a game with friends, discover and download video and songs, and play them on your TV or Xbox 360.
Serious. Fun.
Catch a movie, take in the latest gossip, and power through your to-do list. Go from full-screen video to spreadsheet in one swipe, or snap them side-by-side for easy multi-tasking. Zoom through your files, do instant searches from any app you're in, and fire up familiar programs—they run faster than ever.
The desktop that you're used to—along with the familiar file structure and ways of getting around—is not only still here, it's even better than it was. And things like Control Panel and Task Manager are faster and easier to find and use.
Connected for success
Built-in mobile broadband features in Windows support 3G and 4G. As you move, your PC will automatically find and use available Wi-Fi hotspots. So you can be effortlessly connected and ready to work and stay in touch from anywhere.
Load up on apps from the Windows Store
Windows 8 and Windows RT give you access to the Windows Store, where you can discover a new world of apps for your PC. Just tap or click the Store tile and start exploring. Filter by price, rating, and more. Many apps are free. Others let you try before you buy. So explore and load up on apps—the more you have, the more you can do.
Apps work together
Things that used to take lots of different programs to do now flow together in one simple experience. Use the Photos app to see all your photos from Facebook and Flickr, and then upload them to your blog or send them to friends via email—all without ever leaving the app.
Get to the controls the same way in every app. Just swipe up from the bottom edge or right click with a mouse, and the app commands pop right up. Searching is the same in every app, too—use the Search charm no matter what app you're using to find things within the app, on your PC, or on the web.
Ready to roll: Your basic apps
Windows gives you apps for the basics and a lot more. Apps like People, Mail, Photos, and Messaging power you through essential tasks and work together to make everything easier.

Features:
Windows 7, only better:
Windows 8 is built on the rock-solid foundation of Windows 7, but it's been improved on all fronts.
You can install Windows 8 on the same hardware that powers Windows Vista and Windows 7, and you'll love how it works on new devices, too.
Windows 8 was designed with Windows 7 apps in mind, because you probably have older apps you need to use.
In addition to the new look of the Start Screen, Windows 8 incorporates the desktop that you're familiar with.
Think of the desktop as one of the many apps you can run in Windows 8.
In the desktop, you'll see all the settings, devices and features you used in Windows 7-and you can run the desktop apps you ran in Windows 7, too.
Cloud-connected with your Microsoft account:
Sign in to your Windows 8 device with your Microsoft account and you're immediately connected to the people, files and settings you care about.
Your PC comes to life with all the things that make Windows yours, including your Start page, themes, language preferences, browsing history and browser favourites.
You can connect your favourite services to your Microsoft account, too, like Hotmail, Messenger, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and more.
And you can immediately get to your photos, docs and other files, whether they're on SkyDrive, Facebook, Flickr or other services.
It's all about the apps:
In the Windows Store, you can search for or browse great apps, all grouped in easy-to-find categories.
We highlight great apps for you and provide quick access to frequently downloaded apps.
You can also see how other people have rated apps.
You'll always know what's interesting, new and popular.
You won't have to worry about buying something you don't want because you can try before you buy, if the app supports it.
If you try an app and like it, you can buy it and continue using the full app with no interruption.

Windows 7 users could update to Windows 8 Pro for 48$ but was limited time offer, so paying 150 seems high. The new skype app is easy to use, had trouble getting skydrive to work.

Forget what people have to say about Windows 8 and approach it with an open mind because it is quite well made and kinda awesome IMO. (I consider myself a power user and multi-task like crazy) You would have to be "special" to think that the developers who made this aren't power users and didn't think it through.
I am a software / web developer using a multi-monitor setup with a Dell laptop and really appreciate the addition of a proper second task bar. I sort of like how metro apps have their own task bar.

To a software developer that needs to do testing with Hyper-V, this is for you. For the rest of the users, I would not recommend Windows 8 at all unless that's what they're doing. Although there is Client Hyper-V, there are other requirements of using it which means most laptops that are 3+ years old are not capable of running Client Hyper-V at all.
Well I have being a tech for 12 years and I can say I do not like Windows 8. Really Windows 8 may be good for phones or tablets not going against that but the desktop was completely left out of the picture. It feels like they combined MAC OS X and IOS together and there is a reason why MAC does not do that because it will not work well. The fact is metro like IOS is designed to be used with fingers not a darn mouse which makes the apps hard to use and confusing to the average user. From a business standpoint don't see why anyone would go to Windows 8. I would say I was happy to uninstall it and went back to Windows 7. Time to rethink Microsoft and build a desktop version of Windows not crap we can't use.

I have been a computer tech for 11 years. I have to say that I am not impressed with Windows 8. As always, many clients refuse to listen to my advice. These people have gone ahead and upgraded to Windows 8, even though I said not to. This is not an OS which should be used on a desktop. I am already receiving many complaints from customers who cant navigate around the OS. If you are a gamer, I would advise you to stay with Windows 7 64 Bit as well. Windows 8 is fine for a tablet. It is useless for desktop use. Microsoft is trying to force everyone to use the same OS. This mindset is very similar to what is happening with video games now. Games are now dumbed down because of the console being the leading platform. Microsoft believes that a tablet OS is fine for everyone. Well, wake up to reality there Microsoft. You have disappointed many people with this failure OS.

There's no doubt that Win 8 is a fast OS, and the installation process was the fastest, easiest and most pain-free I've ever experienced. However, if you have a fast desktop PC with large multiple monitors, I would wait until Microsoft comes to its senses and introduces a service pack for desktop users.
