I am very happy with Drobo's product. This is my second Drobo and this one is already filled with 4tb of data. It took 2 days to transfer everything at a regular usb2.0 speed of 20-30mb/s. My first drobo is the S model which I also recommend.
I am an owner of a first-gen Drobo (before they added Firewire) but since that product is discontinued I'm reviewing it here. The drobo has been on 24/7 for 3 years now without incident. I have gone from 4x500GB drives to 4x1TB and now 4x2TB. The thing isn't terribly fast and isn't suited for use as an every-day hard drive. It's meant for backup and media streaming. I use TVersity to stream to all my devices over the network. I suppose if you want to spend a bit more you could go for a Drobo FS which is entirely network based. Anyway, my experience with the 1st gen Drobo has sold me on the brand. My next backup/storage device will be another Drobo of some kind.

I have a love hate with my Drobo after owning for 4 months. It is slow, the Firewire 800 port is crap as many have made mention of this in their reviews. However, I love the fact I can slot in any drive of any size. You are paying a premium for the Drobo simplicity but so far there's no alternative. It took over a day for me to copy 1.5TB but luckily subsequent syncs, if minimal file changes, is much quicker. The fan can get noisy if you have on your desk, I keep mine underneath. Sometimes it does cause my other Firewire 800 devices to disconnect - I have 4 separate FW800 ports on my Mac Pro. I also hate how their support forums are only open to registered Drobo owners so prospective buyers can't read about all the support problems. I like the new Drobo models but they are way too expensive for what it does so I'll probably buy another Drobo FW800.

I travel out of town all of the time to client's sites and I take this Drobo system with me to have access to all of my data when I need it. It is an intelligent data backup system that allows for a complete SATA2 hard drive failure without any data loss, and that was proven when one of my older SATA drives bit the dust.
I currently travel with it loaded with 500GB, 750GB, 1TB and 2TB drives that can be swapped out for larger drives if and when I need them for up to 8TB. This second generation Drobo has USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 interfaces, and I love the latter for fast backups of my 500GB drive in my laptop.

I have nothing but good things to say about the drobo. I have used all types of drives of various sizes with the unit and it has taken everything I have thrown at it. I have yet to have a problem with this product. Easy, no fuss backup solution exactly what I want in a product. Others unfortunately have had trouble with drobo products but I have encountered non thus far. Great product.

I had been waiting for drobo to drop in price after the release of drobopro and it looks like I got it at just the right time; on sale for $370 and a $40 MIR.
$330 for drobo is unheard of and I had to snatch it up.

for years and years when ever I needed more storage I'd buy external hard drives. invariably these drives failed, some of them quickly (what can you say when the cat knocks over an external HD?). Even though I had backed up my data onto DVD's, invariably, even if data wasn't lost, it took time to recover the data.
